I was born in the piedmont of North Carolina the same year that Carter signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. I grew up in Charlotte and parts of Georgia. I attended West Charlotte High School (class of 95) and got a degree in Communications at Antioch College in 1999.
While at Antioch, in addition fellow students, as well as faculty and members of UE 767, I learned a lot from folks at the Georgia Citizens Coalition on Hunger in Atl., the Center for Community Action in Robison County, NC, the Charlotte Organizing Project, and the Southern Empowerment Project in Maryville TN. I also was a participant in Antioch's 1996 Environmental Field Program in the southwest and got to meet and learn from a bunch of great folks through that trip.
After graduating from Antioch I stuck around to lead the 2000 Environmental Field Program in central and southern Appalachia. In the fall of 2000 I began working at Save Our Cumberland Mountains in east Tenn. as a community organizer.
At the begining of 2007 I left staff at SOCM and began training for a cross country bike ride. I biked on the TransAm from east to west with my best friend. After the trip I moved to Baltimore, where I started working as a child care provider. I have since moved with my sweetheart to western North Carolina.
